director of the Democracy Institute
Patrick Basham directs the Democracy Institute, a politically independent think tank. Basham is a global consultant on corporate strategy, branding, social media, economic regulation and advertising. In 2016, he was the only public pollster to predict both Brexit and Donald Trump’s Electoral College victory. A bestselling author, he is a prominent critic of nanny state policies. Basham’s new report on e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn products, which provides lessons for Asian regulators from the policymaking experience in Western democracies, will be published in October. His recent e-book provided governments with a framework to regulate bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Basham was previously a Cato Institute senior fellow and taught tobacco regulation at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to the Cato Institute, he led tobacco regulation research at Canada’s Fraser Institute. He appears regularly on American, British, Canadian and Chinese TV and radio programs.
